What if the Image is Blurry?

This page walks through common causes and solutions for blurry images in the OV80i system.

Focus is on the lens

The OV80i uses a C-mount lens, so focus is adjusted physically on the lens focus ring. There is no focus slider in the software.

Common Causes of Blurry Images

CauseDescription
Out of FocusLens focus ring not set for the working distance
Long Exposure + MotionPart moves during capture, creating motion blur
Low Light + High GainGain boosts image but reduces clarity
Dirty LensSmudges or debris on the camera lens
Improper MountingWrong distance for selected lens focal length

Fixing Blurry Images

1. Refocus the Lens

  • Loosen the lock ring on the lens
  • Rotate the focus ring until the image is sharp
  • Use the live preview to guide the adjustment
  • Re-tighten the lock ring so vibration cannot shift it
Enable Focus View first

In Configure Imaging, tick Enable Focus View in Camera Settings. It highlights edges and shows a focus score, which makes it much easier to find the sharpest point while turning the ring.

2. Check the Working Distance

  • Confirm the camera is mounted at a distance the lens can actually focus at
  • Every C-mount lens has a minimum object distance — closer than that it cannot focus at all
  • Check the focal length and working distance for your lens in the Lens + FOV Table

3. Shorten Exposure to Reduce Blur

  • Go to Image Settings
  • Reduce exposure time (e.g., from 10 ms → 3 ms)
  • Useful for moving parts

You may need brighter lighting to compensate.

4. Add or Increase Lighting

  • Use OV80i's onboard strobe or external lighting
  • Confirm even illumination across the ROI

5. Adjust Gain Sensibly

  • Too much gain adds noise and reduces clarity
  • Try reducing gain and adding light instead

6. Clean the Lens Cover

  • Use a microfiber cloth or lens cleaning wipe
  • Avoid alcohol or abrasive solutions

Still Not Sharp?

  • Use the Test Image button for static validation
  • Compare images to your recipe's training data
  • Retrain if appearance has changed significantly
